About Us

Dr. B.K. Das, (Director, ICAR - CIFRI)

Fisheries are the sole livelihood of fishermen and their families residing in Sundarbans. But presently fisheries in Sundarbans face some difficulties including pollution of the water bodies, intense cyclonic depressions, erosion, salinity alteration, etc. which have an impact on the biodiversity, sustainability, and livelihood of fisher folk viz. shrinking tiger prawn population, indiscriminate fish seed collection, and seizure of fish trawlers by Bangladesh navy. The distressed people for whom fisheries are the main source of livelihood are under immense pressure for their sustenance. They often pose individual/cumulative effects on the lives and livelihoods of the people of Sundarbans.
