ICAR-CIFRI’s support to the fisher-folk community of Sunderbans

CIFRI is engaged in upliftment of the rural populace residing in the remote areas of Indian Sunderbans through its continuous and consistent efforts. CIFRI has extended its support, both in the forms of technical guidance and fisheries input distribution, to the fishermen community under the centrally sponsored schemes like Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) and Tribal Sub Plan (TSP), now known as Scheduled Tribe Component (STC).

ICAR-CIFRI provided support to the SC and ST fishermen who mainly practise fisheries in the ponds through fisheries input distribution as well as technical guidance from time to time in various areas of Sunderbans namely Kultoli, Amtoli, Sahebkhali, Gosaba, Gangasagar, Kakdwip, Narendrapur, Bali Island and Kalitala. During the last 10 years, CIFRI supported a total of 5980 beneficiaries associated with ponds in Indian Sunderbans.

ICAR-CIFRI has also started to motivate the women fish farmers of Sunderbans to take up ornamental fish culture as a profitable venture to improve the income of the rural household. For this purpose, CIFRI not only provided technical support but also distributed the necessary inputs required for ornamental fish farming to the SC and ST rural women of several remote areas of Sunderbans namely Kultoli, Amtoli, Kochukhali, Patharpratima, Nimpith and Narendrapur. In the last 10 years, CIFRI, a total of 280 women beneficiaries of Indian Sunderbans have been supported by CIFRI in starting their venture in ornamental fish farming.
